Stained Glass Window Challenge

Today starts a new challenge on the DRS Designs blog. The design team was challenged to work with stained glass images! Be sure to check them out and see the demo on how to use them here. These are some of the coolest stamps you will find! There are so many possibilities with these beauties! We would love it if you would play along with us. Just post a direct link to your creation in the comment section of this post. If you upload to a public gallery, please use the keyword DRSC16.

Here's the Sympathy card I made for this challenge.

First I stamped the Stained Glass Image, then I used my Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp the Triple Cross image in the center of it. I punched a 1" circle from the sticky part of a Post-It note and stuck it on the image where I wanted the sun to be. I also stuck Post It Notes to the bottom of the image, covering the lower 1.5" of it. I then used a Brayer and blue ink to shade in the sky.

My next step was to do just the opposite with the Post-It Notes at the bottom of the image. I reversed them so that the upper portion of the image was covered by the Post-It Notes exposing the bottom 1.5" of the image. I used my brayer again to apply green ink to the bottom of the image, creating grass.

I created the sun by punching a 1" circle from a piece of scrap paper and using the paper as a stencil. I placed the stencil over the white area in the sky and sponged it with light & dark yellow ink. Then I continued to sponge yellow ink over the crosses and into the grass area to create the look that the sun was shining down on them.

Stamps: DRS Designs- Large Rectangle stained Glass, Triple Cross, Brush Deepest Sympathy
Ink: Versafine Onyx Black, Colorbox Fluid Chalk Ink
Paper: Smooth white cardstock by Office Depot, Colored Cardstock by The Paper Company & American Crafts
Accessories: Stamp-a-ma-jig, Sponge Daubers, Brayer, Post-It notes, 1" Circle punch
Finished Card Size: 4.25" x 5 7/8"

What have I learned from creating this card?

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with how this card turned out, but it was a learning experience for me. Next time, I will probably heat emboss the main focal points of my image, rather then stamping them with black ink. For example, if I was to recreate this specific card, I would heat emboss the stain glass image and the Triple Crosses to prevent the black ink from fading like you see here. That way, as I brayered over the image, the nice and dark crisp lines of the image would still be present. You know what they say, "Practice Makes Perfect," and "you learn from your mistakes." I'm not trying to be perfect and this card is definitely not a mistake, but, I see it as improving my crafting skills for future use!

Fun new summer look to your blog! Beautiful brayered stained glass card -- I really like how you created the triple crosses against a setting sun (or is that a rising sun?). Gorgeous!
